Super Sanding wood products

Super Sanding Varnish and bare wood finishes

In this blog I will describe the process I follow to achieve the super sanding wood product. This achieves a glass smooth finish I have on all of my projects.

I have set out below the 2 separate types of sanding I carry out

Bare Wood Sanding:

  • Assess the quality of the wood to try and identify any imperfections within the project
  • Assess the type of wood, is it hard or soft.
  • I find and use an orbital sander for the best results
  • If hard wood then I start with 40 grit
  • If soft wood then I start with 120 grit
  • Eucalyptus or other very hard wood then i use my “kutzall” angle grinder attachment for best results
  • All varieties of wood are then sanded through to 600 grit for a smooth finish

If the project is a Charcuterie, Cheese or Chopping board then I sand through 800 grit.  The board is then moisturised and sanded a further 10 times to ensure a super smooth finish. I use a food safe mineral oil to raise the natural colours back to the project.

Furniture Sanding:

  • On furniture I use a regular rectangle sander for all edges and corners
  • I use an orbital sander for all large open areas on the project
  • I start on furniture with 120 grit and move through to 320 grit
  • Especially on drawer sides and runners for smooth operation
  • I then use Linseed Oil to return the natural lustre of the piece
