Rock Pool Table

Rock Pool Table Construction

I made this beautiful Rock Pool Table using an old kitchen worktop made of English Oak. The wood was sanded back smooth to remove all grime and damage.

How did you remove all of the damage to the wood?

I used an orbital sander starting with 40 grit paper and then moving through to 240 grit.

How did you create the shape of the river?

I outlined the Rockpool or river run pattern on the wood as a guide. I then routered the design at different depth’s throughout the pattern to give the “river” depth and the look of a flowing river.  Once the effect was created, the wood was again sanded to remove imperfections caused by the router. I created a water tight box to house the entire table top in preparation for the resin pouring.

How did you pour the resin?

The resin is mixed and the colour and shimmer of the resin is mixed in until the desired effect is created. I poured the resin and stirred every 20 minutes for 3hrs to create the desired pattern. I then left the project for 48hrs to completely cure.

What happens next?

I removed the table top from the box container and then sanded from 240 grit through to 2000 grit. By sanding to a 2000 grit, the resin is polished to a super smooth high shine, however I also finish off with a special polish designed for use on resin.
